How Do I …

… use the virtual phones?

New to TryPhone? No problem! Our interface is easy to use for pretty much everyone – whether you're a computer whiz or not. But it may take some getting used to. So here's a bunch of common questions – as well and their handy–dandy answers to get you going:

Q: How do I navigate my way around a virtual phone?

A: TryPhone allows you to interact with virtual phones just as if you held a device in your hand. Simply use your mouse to click on the phone's buttons or – for touch–screen phones – the phone screen.

Q: Which phone buttons can I click?

A: Any button that changes color when you move your mouse over it is fair game. Buttons you can't click are usually grayed out, or lighter in color than those you can click

Q: How come I can click a particular button on one screen, but can't on another?

A: TryPhone's main objective is to show you all the key facets of a device in an interactive manner – without having to wade through a bunch of useless and boring details. For that reason, we only make the most interesting options available to you … so a button may work on one screen, but not on the next.

Q: Why can't I choose whichever option I want in the different menus?

A: As mentioned above, TryPhone's goal is to show you all the cool features a phone is equipped with – in the most efficient way. For example, that's why we allow you to navigate to the wallpaper section of a phone to show you the neat wallpapers available, but will only let you choose one or two. The same goes for features like Web browsing, games, and most other menus.

Q: No matter what numbers or letters I press, "John Doe" or "555–1234" always comes up. What gives?

A: For certain phone screens that allow free–text input – such as a home screen, where you can enter phone numbers – we enter sample text or numbers that type out automatically when you hit a button. But don't worry! This is just another way for us to show you the functionality of the handset more efficiently – the actual handsets won't make you enter every contact as "John Doe."

Q: How do I end an application, or go back to the phone's main screen?

A: Just like on an actual device, the "End" key on the phone is always clickable and will take you back to your phone's home screen. The end key is usually a button that says "End" or has a red phone icon on it.

Q: Can I go back to a screen when I am navigating through a phone?

A: Yes. Like the "End" key, the "Back" key on the phone is always clickable. Just press it on your phone and you will be taken back one screen from your current location.

Q: How do I use special buttons on phones, like the 'pearl' on BlackBerry devices, or a joystick type control?

A: Because of limitations of your computer mouse, we had to get creative. For each such control, we breakup the button into tiny buttons that allow you to navigate as if you were using the original button. For example, for the pearl, if you move your mouse around it, you'll see that we have created tiny areas (virtual buttons) on the left, right, bottom, and top of the pearl itself that you can use to roll left, right, bottom, and top – and if you press on the pearl – that is the same as pressing the pearl on the handset. Similarly, for handsets with joystick type controls, we'll create left, right, bottom, and top buttons to mimic the possible navigations allowed.

Q: What does that four–button toolbar do for me?

A: This toolbar helps your browsing experience. The first three buttons work just like they do on your Web browser – allowing you to go back, forward or to the phone's home screen. The fourth button – which we like to call the 'show–me–what's–clickable' button helps you see what you can click on. Press it, and the clickable buttons will blink twice – allowing you to better see which options are available.

NOTE that you cannot navigate back and forth on a phone by using your actual browser's Back and Forward options – you should use the phone's buttons or this little friendly toolbar.

That's all there is to it! Happy phone trying!
